Trauma is a distressing event that is difficult to cope with. Often times we think of trauma as a major horrific occurrence that can be life-threatening (assault, war, terror attack, rape, etc).
Trauma also includes less-obvious/non life-threatening events that cause emotional distress, such as childhood emotional neglect, toxic relationships, bullying, etc.
Trauma can affect people in various ways, but typically people who have experienced trauma will have “triggers” that bring them back to the traumatic experience or that bring up the uncomfortable feelings and emotions that they felt during or following the trauma.
It can show up unexpectedly and cause the person duress, sometimes at very inopportune times.
Some people have flashbacks, some have nightmares.
Some of the most common symptoms are:
Anxiety, excessive worry, a feeling of unease; ruminating thoughts; reliving the trauma in their mind; thinking about how their life would be different if only…; afraid to fall asleep because of nightmares.
